Who could forget Barbie Almalbis from the known band Barbie’s Cradle? Her latest album, My New Heart was released and made out of her passion and love for music. It even became one of ABS CBN’s Top 10 Albums for 2014. Along with her in the list are OPM’s finest artists and their albums – Brat Pack – Brattitude , Mr. Bones and the Boneyard Circus – The Great Fall Onto Madness Generaton – Generation, Imago – Kapit, Johnny Danao – Samu’t Sari, Throw – Stand, Peso Movement – The Gentle Sound of Chaos, Yeng Constantino – All About Love and Jeck Pilpil & Peacepipe – In-hale Positivity, Ex-hale Negativity.
But do you recall that before Barbie turned into a solo artist, she was then with Hungry Young Poets who collectively popularized the singles Torpe and Firewoman. During her stint with Barbie’s Cradle, she made the hits Tabing Ilog, Money for Food, Langit Na Naman and Limang Dipang Tao by Maestro Extraordinaire Ryan Cayabyab and first popularized by Lea Salonga.
By 2006, Barbie came out with her solo record, Parade which was produced by 12 Stone Records and locally distributed by Warner Music Philippines. Songs Dahilan, Overdrive, Pag-alis and High.
Following the success of Barbie’s debut album, this paved the way pf a live recording of her Araneta Coliseum concert which was released under “Barbie Rocks the Big Dome”. This included many of her big hits as a solo singer and lead vocalist.
Hailed as the Rock Princess, she came back in 2011 with the record, Goodbye My Shadow which featured the songs Constellations, Unraveling, Child of Mine and Buntala.
Barbie’s profound musicality and vocal expertise have given her several awards and nominations. Back in 2006 she bagged the Best Performance by a Female Recording Artist at the prestigious Awit Awards for her single “Just A Smile”. That same year she won at the MEG Magazine Teens Choice Awards as Favorite Female Artist of the Year. Her nominations include Best Fenale Artist in a Video and Best Animated Video for “Dahilan” – MTV Pilipinas 2006; Favorite Female Artist , Favorite Media Soundtrack for “Just A Smile” and Favorite Collaboration for “High” with The Speaks – MYX Music Awards; Best Major Concert (female) for “Barbie Rocks the Big Dome” – 19th Aliw Awards and Artist of the Year, Best Live Act, Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year for “Dahilan”, Album of the Year for “Parade” – NU Rock Awards.
Her influence to the Filipino society most especially to the youth made her the ideal face, ambassador and influencer for some of the country’s leading commercial brands and products thus becoming an ultimate endorser in the making. She got chosen to promote Sunsilk, Bayo clothing line, McDonald’s and even DnD guitars.
In 2013, Smart Communications Inc. launched a campaign that brought her together with other OPM rocks icons Ely Buendia, Rico Blanco and Raimund Marasigan to re-create the classic Filipino rock song Tayo’y Mga Pinoy and helped revive the Philippine Music Industry. After making its debut during the 27th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolutuon, the 3-minute long music video of the Heber Bartolome original instantly reached 2 million plus views on YouTube and was shared thousands of times on other social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
In early 2014, Barbie’s scope of influence was proven after she was partnered with the mega endorser and Mega Star herself Ms. Sharon Cuneta for Nestle NIDO’s television commercial which taught young mothers to worry less about their child’s adventures as long as they give them the proper nourishment to protect them. Both Barbie and Sharon are personalities that mom’s from different walks of life look up to and it is important that their supporters get the right advice for their own children.
Later that year, Barbie was selected to be part of Unilever Breeze’s Circle of Moms together with other celebrity mom’s Dimples Romana and Nikki Valdez for the brand’s “Sige Mom” campaign.
Barbie’s current album, My New Heart is worth a listen to since she considers it her most special and most adventurous project yet. Her music and influence after all these years will continue to create more profound feats for her as well.
Without a doubt, pop singer/ celebrity mom/ brand ambassador and our favorite living “doll” Barbie Almalbis is definitely here to stay…

Century Tuna IM 70.3 (1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21km run)
Subic Bay, Olongapo
March 8, 2015
Congratulations to the male PRO Aussies for dominating the podium at the recently held inaugural Century Tuna IronMan 70.3 at scenic Subic Bay here in the Philippines.
My hats off to champ Timothy Reed who celebrated his birthday a day before the actual race. Very fitting post-birthday gift for mighty Tim!
As for the female PRO so happy for British Parys Edwards who this time took the top spot.; I met her two weeks ago for Challenge PH. She only placed third there. What a great comeback!
Top 3 MALE PRO finishers:
Timothy Reed (AUS) 3:51:59
Mitch Robbins (AUS) 3:55:48
Josh Amberger (AUS) 3:57:12
Top 3 FEMALE PRO finishers:
Parys Edwards (GBR) 4:18:13
Beth Gerdes (USA) 4:24:05
Dimity Lee Duke (AUS) 4:27:39
So blessed to also see Luke McKenzie, Belinda Granger, Katy Duffield, Tim Green in action among others.
However, too bad due to dehydration and back pains respectively heavy TRI favorites Caroline Steffen and Craig Alexander missed racing but their presence were more than enough. Perhaps very soon they can see action again here in thePI.
For the local elites, congrats to Banjo Norte and Monica Torres for bringing home the coveted Top 1 spots! These guys are regulars up there in the podium.
Congrats to Century Tuna VP and General Manager Greg Banzon for a successful IM 70.3. More to come po! Kudos to Fred Uytengsu of Sunrise Events for masteing the art of organizing major TRI races. Thank you as well to Lhen Hasal, Mervin, Lawrence and Hannah of Ogilvy PR for the media assistance.
I’m sooo looking forward to the next TRI events happening only here in my PI where it’s really more fun to race! ☺☺
