Toontastic 3D: New Storytelling App for Kids

Great news for parents and teachers all over the world! You can now download Toontastic 3D, a playful storytelling app for kids to draw, animate and narrate their own 3D cartoons.

Today’s digital devices and tools offer amazing opportunities for kids to imagine, invent and explore with technology—and perhaps most important of all, have fun! Over the years, we’ve worked closely with educators to build programs for kids to create through code, doodle their dreams, explore exotic locales with virtual reality, and even tour the Himalayas with a very friendly Yeti named Verne.. Today, we’re unveiling our latest project for kids—one that will give voice to their imaginations and transform their devices into playful and powerful tools for learning creative skills. It’s called Toontastic 3D.

With Toontastic 3D, kids can draw, animate and narrate their own adventures, news stories, school reports, and anything else they might dream up. All they need to do is move characters around on the screen and tell their story. It’s like a digital puppet theater… but with enormous interactive 3D worlds, dozens of customizable characters, 3D drawing tools, and an idea lab with sample stories to inspire new creations.

Like the original Toontastic (released in 2011 and widely praised by educators, kids, and parents around the globe), Toontastic 3D enables kids to build whatever they like—including book or science reports for school, design pitches, short stories and cartoons.

Toontastic 3D is available and free to download today for phones, tablets and select Chromebooks, on both the Google Play Store and iOS App Store. We hope the app will empower kids to imagine, invent and explore while developing skills for the creative jobs of tomorrow—whether they dream of becoming a filmmaker, a teacher, a designer, a cartoonist, or just want to explore the boundaries of their imaginations.

PLDT Smart SME Nation gears up for its biggest tech summit for MSMEs

TechIsland 3.0 to equip businesses for holistic digital transformation

pkdtManila, Philippines – PLDT Smart SME Nation’s annual business convention for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) is back, this time to help Filipino MSMEs discover uncharted terrains in the ever changing digital landscape.

Now on its third year, TechIsland aims to educate, enable and empower MSMEs to solve real life business challenges through technology. In the past years, the forum focused on introducing MSMEs to ICT solutions for business. According to VP and PLDT Smart SME Nation Head Mitch Locsin, TechIsland 3.0 will now focus on “conquering new territories and markets in today’s dynamic business by harnessing digital tools and platforms.”

“We’ve already established that digital is here and it’s here to stay,” he said. “Now that everyone is on it, it’s time to challenge the standard business mindset and give our MSMEs a new perspective in managing their businesses, capturing and expanding their markets and handling competition. Online is where the action is, and we’re giving MSMEs the tools to thrive and survive in the digital arena.”

Happening on April 22 at the Harbour Tent of Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, the highly anticipated business-to-business ICT forum is expected to draw in over a thousand participants including industry leaders, multinational organizations, start-ups and MSMEs from various industries. Unlike in previous years where participation was limited to IT practitioners, this year’s TechIsland 3.0 is now open to more people including professionals in the fields of marketing, sales, engineering, finance and procurement.

This year is also historic in TechIsland history because, for the first time, slots will be open to the general public on a first-come-first-served basis.

The formidable line-up of plenary speakers include PLDT EVP, Head of EICB and ePLDT CEO Eric R. Alberto, DENTSU Jayme Syfu Chief Executive Officer and “Chairmom” Merlee Jayme, PLDT Chief Strategy Officer Winston Damarillo, and Uber Manila General Manager Laurence Cua, among others.

Registration to TechIsland 3.0 is free. For more information on how to be part of this historic gathering of ICT leaders and innovators in the Philippines, go to

3M wins Edison award for revolutionizing the Salmonella test process

Image3M received the silver honor in the International Edison Award in May in San Francisco for its Petrifilm Salmonella Express System (SALX) that has revolutionized the process of detecting Salmonella with a faster, cheaper system. The process of detecting salmonella in food normally takes 5-7 days to culture and test the bacteria in a petri dish has now become a one-step process that has upgraded the traditional test and enabled medical professionals to act more instantaneously on medical cases.

Traditionally, colonies of bacteria are isolated and transferred to separate agar disks to be tested for Salmonella. Disks are stored in shelves and sent to biochemical labs for confirmation.

The “Petrifilm Salmonella Express System (SALX)” is an all-in-one method that is twice as fast as the traditional test. It makes use of a single Petrifilm disk that can biochemically confirm Salmonella in enriched food and food process environment samples. There will be no need to store multiple disks or to wait for lab results.

Salmonellosis is caused by the Salmonella enterica bacterium which causes food poisoning whose symptoms include diahrrea, fever, dehydration, abdominal cramps and in extreme cases, death.A person can get salmonella by eating contaminated food that has not been completely cooked or has been contaminated after preparation and sometimes even when it has been improperly stored.

The Philippine government has reacted to the threat of public health caused by salmonella and other foodborne diseases by passing the Food Safety Act 2013 (RA 10611) to “protect the public from food-borne and water-borne illnesses and unsanitary, unwholesome, misbranded or adulterated foods”.In compliance with this law, food institutions must now abide by strict guidelines that ensure the safety of their products and protect the health of their consumers.

Food processing companies worldwide have already adapted 3M’s SALX for its scientific and economic benefits. 3M received the silver honor in the Edison Awards held in Minnesota, USA for the medical detection category.
