Unexpected “Sunday Beauty Queen” Wins Best Picture, Irma Adlawan Named MMFF Best Actress

Congratulations to all the winners of the recently concluded 42nd Metro Manila Film Festival 2016 that was held at the KIA Theater in Cubao, Quezon City. It has been a remarkable year for this year’s MMFF that did away with the traditional films the movie goers got used to watching year in and year out. CHANGE was the significant essence.

Who would have thought a dark horse documentary like “Sunday Beauty Queen” would win Best Picture? And so they did with flying colors thanks to the stories of four real life Hongkong domestic helpers. Director Erik Matti did a back to back win as Best Director for his suspense thriller “Seklusyon” but was not around to accept his trophy. Also a no-show was the evening’s Best Actor and king of make up transformation Paolo Ballesteros for his remarkable role as Trisha Echevarria in “Die Beautiful” while seasoned theater actress and sought after “mother” Irma Adlawan of the advocacy film “Oro” finally brought home a Best Actress title upsetting Noranians in the audience who routed for superstar Ms. Nora Aunor’s “Kabisera”.

I was personally surprised that “Kabisera” did not win anything at all not even a special award considering it has a talented and award-winning ensemble cast led by Ms. Aunor.

Heavily favored Best Supporting Actor and “Die Beautiful”s Christian Bables won for the coveted title while Phoebe Walker aka Sister Cecilia in “Seklusyon” was awarded Best Supporting Actress and very thankful for such honor she did not expect.
