With the aim to help young Filipino athletes realize their dreams through inspirational stories, ABS CBN Sports+Action has a new sports event in their sleeve. Let’s say hello to #TeamU

Team U is hosted by sports-minded Piolo Pascual and Gerald Anderson who also double as the show’s producers in their newly-formed production outfit Get Passionate. Piolo is known for his Sub-Piolo monicker in running while Gerald was first discovered during a basketball game before entering showbusiness.

“I have never been competitive in any sport,” admits Piolo. “This show is our way of giving back for all the blessings we have. All proceeds and funds coming in from the sponsors will go to the program and the athletes.”
PapaPioloooooooo222222222222222The 30-minute sports-documentary features stories of young men and women in the field of sports who are on a quest to bring pride and glory to the country through their athletic talents. Team U presents the reality that a lot of young Filipino athletes do have that inborn knack for being athletic but something that remains undiscovered and unfulfilled due to a lack of support, access to financial aid, scholarships and proper training gears.
coachEskiMarcoThe show is also composed of segment hosts who are equally popular in the respective sports: Gretchen Ho (volleyball), Armand Del Rosario (football), Coach Marco Benitez & Coach Eski Ripoll.
“I remember when I was in high school, our volleyball team used to be underground,” recalls Gretchen. “We would even spend from out of our own pockets to be able to purchase some equipments that we need. It was very difficult.”
GretchenCollageIt is with this premise that Team U also aims to encourage viewers and organizations from both public and private sectors to be part of building a Sports School—an institution that aims to develop athletes through proper training and development under the wing of acclaimed sports practitioners.
EskiSolo  When asked if the show interferes in any way with the Philippine Sport’s Commission’s own sports development programs  Coach Eski clarifies, “Not exactly, in fact, we will be helping and will be working side by side with the PSC in the quest for discovering and honing young and deserving athletes.”
PioloGerald.22222jpgFor its first season, the show will travel to three schools that are being looked at as pilot regional campuses under the Sports School, namely Rizal High School in Pasig City, Abellana National High School in Cebu, and General Santos City High School in General Santos City.

GeraldCollage“I was surprised and happy when I learned the crew also included General Santos City. I owe a lot to basketball. Maraming matutulungang potential athletes ang show namin, shares Gerald.
SoloPiolo3“We also hope this new show will not only be for one season. We’re working on for at least two years so that we can help more kids and monitor their progress both in the sport they excel in and their academics. There should be balance.” concludes Piolo.

Don’t miss the exciting premiere episode of “Team U,” on June 15 at 11:30am on ABS-CBN Sports + Action Channel 17 and June 16 at 1:30pm on Balls Channel 33.
